Kanye West, once a titan in the music industry and fashion world, is exploring a significant shift in his career path. Despite the early success of his Vultures album, the rapper, known for his erratic behavior and controversial statements, is contemplating a new business venture. Recent reports reveal that West is considering launching a brand called Droam, which would feature a range of accessories, from shoulder and tote bags to whips and umbrellas.
According to The Sun, West has filed a trademark application for Droam, which might also include an exclusive gym collection. This move comes after his previous Yeezy brand, which once soared to billion-dollar status, faced major setbacks due to his inflammatory remarks. West’s career took a hit when brands distanced themselves following his anti-Semitic comments and provocative actions.
Adidas, which had a high-profile partnership with Yeezy, re-evaluated its relationship with West in 2022 after he showcased a “White Lives Matter” t-shirt during Paris Fashion Week. The company condemned his behavior, stating, “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect, and fairness.”
Similarly, JP Morgan and Gap ended their affiliations with West. Gap responded to West’s claims that the company breached their agreement by stating, “Antisemitism, racism, and hate in any form are inexcusable and not tolerated. We are partnering with organizations that combat hate and discrimination.”
West’s troubles extended beyond business as well. Creative Artists Agency and luxury design house Balenciaga also severed ties with him. MRC, a film production company, decided not to release a completed documentary about West, citing his use of harmful rhetoric.
The fallout from these controversies has severely impacted West’s financial standing. Forbes reported a dramatic drop in his net worth from $1.5 billion to $400 million following the Adidas partnership’s end. The Campaign Against Antisemitism noted that the decision by brands to cut ties with West was influenced by a significant public outcry, including a petition with nearly 175,000 signatures.
As West navigates these career changes, the success of his new venture remains to be seen. The shift from a once-celebrated music and fashion icon to a business entrepreneur marks a new chapter in his turbulent career.
