Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis faces a significant challenge as the estranged wife of special prosecutor Nathan Wade, hired in the criminal election interference case involving former President Donald Trump, takes center stage in a legal drama.

According to a report by Florida Politics on January 19, 2024, a recent motion filed by a defense attorney in the election case suggests a romantic involvement between Willis and attorney Nathan Wade. In response, lawyers for Wade’s estranged wife, Joycelyn Wade, have served a subpoena on Willis.

Willis contends that Joycelyn Wade’s actions are a blatant attempt to obstruct and interfere with the ongoing criminal case against Trump and others.

In a court filing aimed at quashing the subpoena, Willis’ lawyer, Cinque Axam, accuses Joycelyn Wade of conspiring to use the civil discovery process to damage Willis’ professional reputation.

Joycelyn Wade’s lawyer, Andrea Hastings, counters, expressing their intention to facilitate a fair and private resolution to her client’s divorce.

Notably, the court filing does not directly address the alleged romantic involvement between Willis and Wade.

The situation escalates further as defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, representing former Trump campaign staffer Michael Roman, files a motion alleging an inappropriate relationship between Willis and Wade. Merchant contends that this has led to a conflict of interest, asserting that Willis personally profited from the prosecution.

The motion seeks to have the indictment thrown out, with demands for both Willis and Wade to be removed from the case.

Willis’ office plans to respond to Merchant’s motion in a court filing, although a specific timeline is yet to be provided. Concrete evidence supporting the allegations of an inappropriate relationship is yet to be presented by the defense.

Merchant also alleges that Wade, the prosecutor accused of a romantic relationship with Willis, has financially benefited from the prosecution, taking Willis on vacations using his earnings. Merchant questions Wade’s qualifications to try the case, pointing out his lack of experience in prosecuting felony cases.

Despite Willis defending Wade’s hiring, citing his years of experience as a municipal court judge and in private practice, the controversy surrounding their alleged relationship persists.

The defense further files a motion to unseal Wade’s pending divorce filings, prompting a coalition of news organizations, including The Associated Press, to seek access.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee has scheduled a hearing on Merchant’s motion for February 15 and ordered prosecutors to respond by February 2.

Meanwhile, the criminal case against Trump and Roman, indicted in August for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, continues. Four individuals charged in the case have already pleaded guilty, while Trump, Roman, and the remaining defendants maintain their not-guilty pleas.
