Former President Donald Trump’s leadership PAC, Save America, disbursed over $2.9 million to law firms in January as his legal challenges continued to escalate. Additionally, the PAC accrued unpaid legal bills exceeding $1.9 million at the end of January, according to a filing with federal regulators on Tuesday.
The largest payment from Save America, amounting to over $583,000, was directed to the law firm of John Lauro. Lauro is representing Trump in a federal election subversion case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Save America, primarily funded with money raised after Trump’s 2020 election loss, has been a key source for covering legal expenses for Trump and some individuals connected to the cases against him.
In 2023, Save America allocated more than $55 million toward legal bills, constituting nearly 85% of its expenditures. Trump’s political apparatus channels 10% of its online fundraising proceeds from supporters to Save America.
As the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, Trump currently faces 91 criminal indictments spanning four jurisdictions, with substantial legal penalties looming from civil cases. Despite these challenges, Trump has vowed to appeal the judgments and has consistently portrayed the legal actions as part of a politically motivated conspiracy.
In a Fox News town hall on Tuesday, Trump drew comparisons between his legal situation and the persecution faced by Alexey Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who recently died in a Russian prison. When questioned about the nearly $355 million judgment in his New York civil fraud trial, Trump remarked, “It is a form of Navalny, it is a form of communism or fascism.” Trump’s efforts to frame his legal battles within the context of political persecution add a new dimension to his ongoing legal saga.
