Democratic candidates Phillips, Williamson, and Uygur joined forces in condemning attempts to prevent Trump’s participation in NewsNation’s Democratic Presidential Forum, according to a report by Mediaite on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
The dialogue gained momentum when the candidates were asked to share their views on Maine and Colorado’s decisions to block Trump from the forthcoming electoral race.
Marianne Williamson voiced her reservations about the legal ramifications, asserting, “He has not been convicted of the crime of insurrection. He hasn’t been, and so for a judge to just opine on this, I think it’s very dangerous.”
Emphasizing the significance of due process, Williamson cautioned against premature judgments, stressing the necessity of a fair legal procedure.
“The people who love Donald Trump are going to vote for Donald Trump. We could indict him 91 more times, he could be in prison, people are going to vote for him. Anything we do to try to obstruct Donald Trump, this is not the way we’re going to win in ’24. We’re going to win in ’24 by offering the American people a better life,” she added.
Williamson concluded by affirming the importance of addressing the electorate’s concerns through policy rather than engaging in legal battles.
“We will beat him on the issues. Let us not beat him in court,” she declared, emphasizing the candidates’ collective commitment to a democratic process.
NewsNation host Dan Abrams turned to Cenk Uygur, seeking his perspective on whether Donald Trump should be excluded from the ballot based on the 14th Amendment.
Uygur underscored the necessity for a comprehensive and lawful approach, stating, “We need to be careful about the legal arguments. If you start saying, ‘Let’s take him off the ballot,’ it has unintended consequences.”
Continuing, Uygur stressed the importance of addressing core issues concerning the American people. “We have to beat him on the merits. We have to beat him on healthcare, education, and the economy. We have to convince the American people that we are right and that they should vote for us,” aligning with the broader sentiment expressed by the Democratic candidates.
The critique against efforts to bar Trump from the ballot reveals a shared belief among these Democratic contenders that victory lies in addressing the concerns of the electorate and presenting a compelling vision for the future.
As the political landscape evolves, their emphasis on a democratic approach and focus on substantive issues provides insight into the strategies that may shape the upcoming electoral contest.
