Lionel Richie is eagerly awaiting the arrival of his granddaughter, but not without some humor. The American Idol judge, 74, shared a light-hearted update on his daughter Sofia Richie, 25, and her husband Elliot Grainge as they prepare for their first baby.
On the red carpet for the American Idol season finale on Sunday, May 19, Lionel revealed to Extra that Sofia and Elliot are having a “complete nervous breakdown” as they get ready for their baby girl. He jokingly advised them, “Calm down. When the baby comes, then your nervous breakdown will start, you know.”
Reflecting on his life’s changes, Lionel mentioned, “I mean, my life is so full right now. I mean, 39 years ago was We Are the World: The Greatest Night in Pop, and now here it is on Netflix and is doing amazing, number one around the world. And then we’ve got my Sofie — my baby’s now having a baby. What the heck is going on?”

Lionel, who has three children—Sofia, Nicole Richie, 42, and Miles Brockman Richie, 29—is also a proud granddad to Nicole’s children: daughter Harlow Winter, 16, and son Sparrow James, 14, with her husband Joel Madden.
Sofia announced her pregnancy in January, and she recently celebrated nine months by sharing a side profile of her baby bump on Instagram. Her caption read, “9 months of bliss 💕🕊️.”
