Former President Donald Trump’s persistent assertions of passing a cognitive test designed to assess mental acuity have once again come under scrutiny, casting doubt on his claims to mental sharpness. During a recent appearance in New Hampshire, Trump revisited his performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a test aimed at evaluating cognitive abilities, particularly in the elderly or stroke victims.

Trump, who had previously touted acing the test before the 2020 election, faced widespread criticism for boasting about what many perceived as a basic evaluation. Undeterred, he brought up the test during the New Hampshire event, describing it as having “35, 30 questions” and involving progressively challenging tasks, such as identifying animals like a giraffe, tiger, or whale.

However, a report by the Washington Post contradicted Trump’s account, citing the MoCA’s creator, Canadian neurologist Ziad Nasreddine. Nasreddine refuted Trump’s claim of a whale in the test, stating, “I don’t think we have a version with a whale,” suggesting Trump may be recalling the test inaccurately or using a hypothetical scenario.

Trump’s recurrent references to the cognitive test have become a source of amusement among Republican insiders. In a June 4, 2020 meeting, Trump spontaneously suggested challenging Joe Biden to a cognitive test, a move that left attendees perplexed. Despite advice against it, Trump’s insistence on the cognitive test has persisted, raising eyebrows within political circles.

Recent instances of Trump’s apparent misidentifications and factual errors during public appearances have fueled skepticism about his mental acuity. The controversy surrounding his cognitive test performance remains a subject of scrutiny and amusement, as questions about the former president’s mental fitness continue to shape the narrative around his post-presidential activities.
