The future of Major League Baseball (MLB) is set to change dramatically as Commissioner Rob Manfred reveals plans for an automated strike zone within the next four years. Speaking on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Manfred emphasized the inevitability of this technological advancement, highlighting the precision of modern tracking systems.
Precision Technology Transforming the Game
Manfred stated, “I think you will see some version of the automated strike zone in the big leagues in the next four years.” The commissioner underscored the impressive capabilities of current technology, which can track the trajectory of pitches to within 1/100th of an inch. With such accurate data at their disposal, the call for an automated system is becoming increasingly compelling.
Testing the Waters in Triple-A
Since the start of the 2023 season, Triple-A games have been utilizing a fully automated strike zone. This initiative has provided valuable insights into the system’s effectiveness. During the same period, the league experimented with a challenge system, which became a permanent feature in June 2023.
Manfred noted, “We have decided that we’re going to test the challenge version. There are two versions of the automated ball-strike system (ABS): one where every pitch is called in the umpire’s ear, and the other is a challenge system. We’re going to test the challenge system in spring training with major-league players.”
Future of MLB Under Manfred
With his contract running through the 2028 season, Manfred has indicated he plans to step down in January 2029. The implementation of an automated strike zone could be one of the lasting legacies of his tenure.
