Harris County, Texas – A 27-year-old man with an intellectual disability tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in northwest Harris County. The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 6 and Forest Trails Drive in the Copperfield area around 5 p.m. on Thursday.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), the victim failed to yield to traffic, resulting in the collision. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim, residing at a group home located just a block away from the scene, was supposed to be under supervision, as confirmed by HCSO. The tragedy has raised concerns about the responsibility of the group home in providing adequate care and oversight for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Major Susan Cotter of HCSO acknowledged that the agency’s boarding home detail would be investigating the incident further. Neighbors in the area expressed their heartbreak upon hearing the news, emphasizing that the group home personnel should have been closely monitoring the victim.
Andrew, a concerned neighbor, stated that he and others had voiced complaints about the home for approximately a year, fearing that a tragic event like this would occur due to lack of proper supervision. He described the incident as a case of negligence, placing the responsibility on the company operating the group home.
The driver involved in the accident remained at the scene, and initial investigations suggest that they were not at fault, according to Major Cotter.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim.
