Matthew Lillard, known for his role as Shaggy in the beloved Scooby-Doo franchise, once believed that his career would skyrocket following the success of the 2002 live-action film. Reflecting on his expectations, Lillard stated, “I thought I’d be No. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies. And the reality was the exact opposite happened.” Unfortunately, Scooby-Doo 2 failed to resonate with audiences and critics alike. The film grossed less than $200 million, falling short of the original’s success. This disappointing performance not only halted Lillard’s career momentum but also forced him to reevaluate his aspirations as an actor.
Caught in the whirlwind of early success, Lillard became engrossed in the fame and opportunities that came his way. He admitted, “I was caught up in the success of what I was doing… I was caught up in this drive to be quote-unquote famous.” Eventually, he realized that chasing fame wasn’t his true goal. He shared a pivotal moment of self-reflection: “If I do Dancing With the Stars, I’ll be famous and not a great actor, and I really just wanted to be a great actor. I said [to my agent], ‘I just want to be an actor. I just want to be in movies. I want to reset my expectations.’”
This shift in mindset helped Lillard navigate through the ups and downs of his career. Despite experiencing periods of irrelevance, he remained resilient. He noted, “I’ve gone through good patches and bad patches. I’ve been irrelevant and thought I was never going to work again.”
