Tragic and horrifying incident reported by Law and Crime on May 2, 2024, Sage Curry, a 22-year-old man from Florida, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the brutal murders of a 78-year-old woman, Zhaneta Dindi, and her 17-year-old granddaughter, Hera Dindi.
The court proceedings revealed that Curry, facing two murder charges and one charge of armed burglary, followed the victims to their Largo, Florida home and carried out a merciless attack on the night of April 26, 2021. He entered their home through a bedroom window and used a sharp kitchen knife to fatally stab Zhaneta Dindi multiple times while she was asleep. Hera Dindi bravely tried to defend her grandmother but tragically succumbed to Curry’s violent assault, receiving nine stab wounds in the throat.
The swift verdict of guilty on two counts of murder was reached by the jury after just one hour of deliberation, despite Curry’s defense of insanity. The emotional impact of this heinous crime was palpable in court, especially as Arreti Dindi, Zhaneta’s daughter and Hera’s aunt, spoke about the devastating loss their family has endured.
Arreti Dindi’s poignant words highlighted the shattered dreams and aspirations of Hera, who never got the chance to fulfill her potential and lead a fulfilling life. The grief and trauma inflicted on the family were further compounded by Curry’s attempt to stage the crime scene as an accident.
Largo Police Department Lieutenant Scott Gore characterized this act as a “random act with no known relationship between the victims and the arrested,” indicating the senseless and arbitrary nature of the violence.
Neighbors and acquaintances of the victims expressed shock and disbelief, describing them as kind individuals who simply wanted a peaceful existence. Angela Curry, Sage Curry’s mother, revealed the struggles of affording mental health medication for her son, underscoring the challenges faced by families dealing with mental illness and the urgent need for accessible mental health resources and support.
The case of Sage Curry serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of untreated mental illness and the importance of addressing mental health issues within our communities.
