Basketball legend Michael Jordan is poised to make history in a completely different sport. As the co-owner of 23XI Racing, he is just one race away from claiming the NASCAR Cup Series Championship. This potential victory could create an awkward situation for NASCAR, which is currently facing a lawsuit from Jordan’s team.
The Road to the Championship
Tyler Reddick, Jordan’s driver, secured a place in the prestigious NASCAR Cup Series Championship race scheduled for November 10 at Phoenix Raceway. His remarkable last-lap victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway on October 27 not only advanced his position but also intensified the ongoing legal disputes between 23XI Racing and NASCAR.
Should Reddick clinch the championship, NASCAR would find itself in a challenging position. Awarding the championship trophy to Jordan and his team while embroiled in legal battles could lead to significant embarrassment for the organization.
Legal Troubles Brewing
The lawsuit against NASCAR, spearheaded by 23XI Racing and co-owner Denny Hamlin, alleges monopolistic practices and anti-competitive behavior. The lawsuit claims that NASCAR, led by CEO Jim France, has implemented restrictive policies that hinder fair competition in the sport.
Hamlin expressed his excitement about the potential championship win, stating, “A problem I’d love to have is … have [NASCAR President] Steve Phelps hand me that championship trophy in Phoenix.” He noted that Phelps has indicated a willingness to present the trophy if the opportunity arises.

The Antitrust Battle
Jordan’s clash with NASCAR is centered on antitrust issues, supported by another racing team, Front Row Motorsports. Both teams argue that NASCAR’s practices stifle competition and harm teams, drivers, and fans. Their lawsuit outlines various grievances, such as restrictions preventing teams from participating in races outside of the NASCAR framework and mandating the purchase of parts from NASCAR-approved suppliers.
The suit highlights the struggles of teams like Front Row Motorsports, which have faced difficulties turning a profit, even as NASCAR enjoys lucrative partnerships with major corporations like Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Fox.
Reddick’s Championship Hopes
Tyler Reddick is among the top contenders for the NASCAR Cup Series Championship. He is one of only two drivers guaranteed a spot in the final race, alongside Joey Logano. Other notable drivers, including Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott, William Byron, and Ryan Blaney, are battling for the remaining spots ahead of the critical Martinsville race this weekend.
A championship win for Reddick would not only mark Jordan’s first triumph in NASCAR but also solidify his status as one of the greatest athletes across all sports. It would be a crowning achievement in Reddick’s burgeoning career and add another chapter to Jordan’s already legendary legacy.
