House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has come under scrutiny due to his past involvement in anti-LGBTQ+ activities, raising concerns about his views on LGBTQ+ rights. Johnson’s controversial history includes supporting groups promoting conversion therapy and opposing same-sex marriage, sparking outrage and criticism from various quarters.
CNN recently reported that Johnson provided legal advice to Exodus International, a leading organization in the “ex-gay” movement. He collaborated with the group between 2006 and 2010, actively participating in campaigns that demeaned LGBTQ+ individuals. Exodus International organized events like the “Day of Truth,” meant to counter LGBTQ+ awareness initiatives with anti-gay propaganda.
In a 2008 radio interview, Johnson made statements comparing homosexuality to behavior rather than an inherent trait, drawing sharp criticism. Despite his past involvement, Johnson attempted to downplay his actions, claiming he was merely defending state marriage amendments and the rule of law.
However, his track record reveals a deeply rooted anti-LGBTQ+ stance. Johnson has vehemently opposed LGBTQ+ rights, referring to homosexuality as “inherently unnatural” and “dangerous.” He has even suggested a connection between gay sex and the fall of the Roman Empire, a claim widely debunked by historians.
Moreover, Johnson’s legislative efforts have raised concerns. He has advocated for national versions of Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, portraying it as a defense against alleged attempts to immerse young children in “sexual imagery and radical gender ideology.”
Critics have pointed out that Johnson’s wife, Kelly Johnson, shares similarly discriminatory views. She operates an organization called Onward Christian Counseling Services, which has been known to compare homosexuality to bestiality and incest.
Johnson’s past affiliations and statements have elicited strong reactions, with many labeling him as homophobic and expressing disappointment in his continued opposition to LGBTQ+ rights. While Exodus International founder publicly apologized for the harm caused by the organization, Johnson has not expressed similar remorse, further intensifying the controversy surrounding his stance.
As public discourse on LGBTQ+ rights continues to evolve, Johnson’s position remains a topic of concern, raising questions about his ability to represent all constituents, regardless of sexual orientation.
