In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a family in Fort Worth, Texas, faced an unimaginable tragedy due to a heating system malfunction that claimed the life of their 17-month-old daughter, Sammy Volmer.
Carrie and Larry Volmer had been living an ordinary life with their two children, Jackson, three years old, and Sammy, 17 months old. Little did they know that a horrifying incident would shatter their world.
On a seemingly normal night, Sammy had been put to bed by her parents. Like most nights, she cried for a short while before drifting off to sleep. However, the following morning, Sammy’s father, Larry, made a devastating discovery that no parent should ever endure.
Larry went upstairs to check on Sammy, but as he climbed the stairs, he felt an unusual warmth. “As soon as I got to the top of the stairs, it was very warm. I mean, hot,” Larry explained. Tragically, it was already too late. Sammy had passed away in her crib. The malfunctioning heating system had caused the temperature in her room to soar to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Tarrant County medical examiner determined that Sammy’s cause of death was hyperthermia due to elevated body temperature. Doctors also revealed a chilling fact: had Sammy’s older brother, Jackson, been in his usual bedroom that night, he too could have been in grave danger. Young children, unable to regulate their body temperature as effectively as adults, are particularly vulnerable to overheating.
Carrie recounted the events leading up to the tragedy. She had put Sammy to bed as usual, taking every precaution to ensure her safety. Sammy’s room was free of stuffed animals and pillows, and the baby had been monitored closely. However, no one could have foreseen the heating system malfunction.
Carrie, who had always been vigilant about her children’s well-being, expressed her deep regret that she had not been aware of the potential risks associated with heating systems. She wished she had read about it somewhere or had a thermometer to monitor the room’s temperature.
Following Sammy’s tragic passing, the Volmer family sought legal action against the heating system’s manufacturer to seek answers and prevent similar incidents. Sammy’s memory lives on through a Facebook page created by her mother, called “Remembering Sammy.” The page shares cherished memories of Sammy while also raising awareness about the dangers of heating system malfunctions.
Carrie’s message to others is clear: she hopes that by sharing Sammy’s story, other families, especially those with two-story homes, can be informed and take precautions to protect their children from such heart-wrenching tragedies.
While nothing can fill the void left by Sammy’s absence, her family is determined to keep her memory alive. Sammy’s room remains open, with her crib and plush toys, a poignant reminder of a beloved child who will never be forgotten.
“We miss her every second of the day,” Carrie said. “There’s a very large hole in our family without her here.”
Sammy’s story serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of vigilance and awareness when it comes to child safety, even in the supposed safety of their own bedrooms.
