A group of Georgia lawmakers has taken decisive action to address a troubling breach in Coffee County’s electoral process, Alive reported on Wednesday, February 13.
Prompted by alarming revelations, these lawmakers have called upon the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate a security breach that occurred during the 2021 elections in Coffee County, Georgia.
The incident, which occurred on January 7, 2021, involved individuals associated with former President Trump’s efforts to contest the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Surveillance footage captured these individuals gaining unauthorized access to the secure area of the county election office, where they reportedly scanned election software, raising serious concerns about the integrity of future elections.
Despite clear evidence of wrongdoing, local prosecutors in Coffee County have failed to pursue charges against the perpetrators, leaving the security of the electoral process in question.
State Representative Shea Roberts, along with several other Democratic lawmakers, has raised significant concerns about the lack of action and accountability in addressing this breach.
“It’s been what, three years now?” remarked Representative Roberts. “And we don’t seem to be worried about whether people are stealing our election software.”
The lawmakers’ efforts have intensified as they push for a thorough investigation by the DOJ and the FBI.
Representative Roberts, along with Representative Billy Mitchell, Representative Sam Park, and others, have written a formal request to the federal agencies, urging them to intervene and ensure accountability for the breach.
Despite the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) opening a case file, lawmakers have criticized the investigation as “an embarrassingly inferior investigation,” citing concerns about the lack of progress and transparency.
Attorney General Chris Carr’s office has received the case file from the GBI, yet no further action has been taken.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger expressed hope for prosecution, stating, “The people will be prosecuted for that, is my hope.”
However, the responsibility for prosecuting the Coffee County case falls solely on Fulton County, where former election director Misty Hampton and Coffee County Republican leader Cathy Latham are embroiled in a RICO case alongside former President Trump.
The decision to involve Fulton County in prosecuting the Coffee County case has raised eyebrows among lawmakers, with Representative Roberts questioning why local prosecutors failed to take action closer to the scene of the breach.
“I don’t understand why someone three hundred miles away is more interested in making sure our elections are secure and prosecuting a crime in Coffee County,” stated Representative Roberts.
As fears of election rigging continue to loom, these lawmakers remain steadfast in their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Georgia’s electoral process, underscoring the importance of accountability and transparency in upholding democracy.
