As the 2024 presidential election looms, a recent poll suggests that former President Donald Trump holds a clear advantage over President Joe Biden, despite grappling with various legal challenges.
According to a report from Benzinga on January 26, 2024, the poll also reveals widespread dissatisfaction among Americans with both candidates, with a majority expressing a desire for new faces in the White House.
Conducted by Reuters/Ipsos from January 22-24, the poll surveyed 1,250 adults, including 478 Democrats, 572 Republicans, and 118 independents. Respondents were asked about their preferences in the upcoming election and reasons behind their choices.
The results indicate a six-percentage-point lead for Trump over Biden among all respondents, with figures standing at 40% and 34%, respectively. Among registered voters, the gap narrows to five points, with Trump at 43% and Biden at 38%. Trump’s advantage is particularly driven by robust support from Republicans, where 81% back him compared to Biden’s 78% support among Democrats.
The poll introduced independent candidates Robert Kennedy Jr. and Dean Phillips to gauge their impact on the race. With these options, Trump’s support drops to 36%, while Biden’s falls to 30%. Kennedy, an environmental activist and anti-vaccine advocate, secures 8% of the vote, and Phillips, a businessman and Minnesota congressman, receives 2%.
Notably, 10% of respondents state they would not vote, and 13% remain unsure. The poll suggests a rebound in Trump’s popularity since early January, where he and Biden were tied at 35%.
Despite facing legal challenges related to his business dealings, taxes, role in the Capitol riot, and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, Trump’s resurgence contrasts with Biden’s declining approval. A recent Gallup poll indicates only a 40% approval rating for Biden, with 56% disapproving.
However, the Reuters/Ipsos poll underscores that neither candidate is considered ideal by most Americans, who express fatigue with familiar faces on the ballot. A significant 56% express opposition to Trump’s potential re-run, while only 35% are in favor. For Biden, 70% oppose his re-run, with only 22% supporting the idea.
Overall, 67% of respondents express a desire for new presidential candidates, while only 19% find the current options satisfactory. The poll also reveals mixed motivations among voters, with 59% of Biden supporters voting against Trump, while 38% support Biden’s policies. Among Trump supporters, 59% vote for Trump and his policies, while 39% vote against Biden and his policies.
Age emerges as a factor in voter perceptions, with 74% considering the 79-year-old Biden too old for government work and 48% expressing similar concerns about the 75-year-old Trump. This dynamic may contribute to the appeal of younger and fresher alternatives for some voters.
The poll, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for all respondents and plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for registered voters, presents a nuanced view of the electorate’s sentiments as the 2024 election cycle unfolds.
