The New York Post has endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump in a surprising twist, reversing its stance from just two years ago when the newspaper’s editorial board sharply condemned him as “unworthy” of office following his actions—or lack thereof—during the January 6 Capitol riots.
On its Friday front page, the Post hailed Trump as the “clear choice for a better future,” supporting the former president over Democratic nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris. This endorsement signals a stark departure from the paper’s previously critical stance, where it blamed Trump for “incitement by silence” during the Capitol riots.
In July 2022, the New York Post’s editorial board castigated Trump’s handling of January 6, particularly for his three-hour period of inaction as rioters stormed the Capitol. They stated, “Trump didn’t lift a finger to stop the violence,” describing his behavior as a fundamental failure of character. The paper emphasized that Trump’s attempt to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject the election results was unforgivable, concluding that he had proven himself “unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again.”
However, in its latest endorsement, the editorial board does not revisit the Capitol riots, instead applauding Trump’s policies on the economy and immigration. The editorial touts Trump’s “strength and vigor,” especially in light of what it describes as “unprecedented and disgraceful weaponization of the justice system against him” and relentless media scrutiny. The board’s endorsement sharply criticizes the Biden administration’s approach to governance and describes Harris as “radical,” arguing that Trump is the “right choice” in an election with “stark and simple” choices.
