Bold response to President Trump’s latest legal threat, The New York Times is reaffirming its commitment to independent journalism. On Wednesday, the paper fired back after Trump accused it of meddling in legal matters involving his lawsuit against Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS News. The threat came via a social media post where Trump suggested that the Times journalists might be liable for “tortious interference” in the ongoing case.
The Times’ rebuttal was swift and direct. “President Trump’s post today follows a long list of legal threats aimed at discouraging or penalizing independent reporting about the administration,” the statement read. “The law is clear and protects a strong free press and favors an informed American public.”
Trump’s criticism was sparked by a Tuesday evening report by the Times, which discussed efforts by Trump’s legal team and Paramount Global to settle a lawsuit involving a “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. The article also included commentary from legal experts who deemed the lawsuit “baseless” and predicted an easy win for CBS. Trump, however, vehemently disagreed, using his Truth Social platform to take aim at the Times.
Despite the pressure, The New York Times made it clear that it would not be intimidated. “We will continue to pursue the facts without fear or favor and stand up for journalists’ First Amendment right to ask questions on behalf of the American people,” the statement asserted.
Earlier this week, Trump had also attacked various news outlets, including the Times, over negative polling results and public opinion on his handling of issues like tariffs and the economy. The ongoing back-and-forth underscores the tense relationship between the Trump administration and the media.
