The Baltimore Ravens may be on the brink of securing another MVP award, following Lamar Jackson’s remarkable win last season. NFL Network analyst Kyle Brandt believes this year’s MVP could come from the same team, but instead of Jackson, he’s backing running back Derrick Henry.
During a segment on “Good Morning Football,” Brandt made a compelling case for Henry as the leading contender for the 2024 NFL MVP title through the first seven weeks of the season.
“I think he’s the MVP front-runner right now in the NFL,” Brandt boldly stated. “He leads the league in yards, leads the league in rushing touchdowns. He’s averaging 5.9 yards per carry. The stats are absolutely garish. I think he is the guy.”
Brandt hailed Henry as a “scene-stealer,” highlighting the running back’s ability to overshadow even the league’s best quarterbacks with his electrifying performances and staggering numbers.
Henry’s Standout Season So Far
The last time a running back claimed the MVP was Adrian Peterson in 2012, when he rushed for an incredible 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 10-6 record. Henry, now 30, is carving out a similarly dominant season. He has already amassed 704 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns on 119 carries, maintaining an impressive 5.9 yards per rush.
Projecting his current pace over a full 17-game season, Henry could reach nearly 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns, numbers that would make him a strong contender for the MVP. Notably, Henry was the last running back to surpass 1,900 yards, achieving the feat in 2020.
Historic Back-to-Back MVPs?
If Henry were to clinch the MVP award, it would mark a historic moment for the Ravens, making them the first team to produce back-to-back MVPs since Marshall Faulk and Kurt Warner did it for the St. Louis Rams in 2000 and 2001.
Brandt expressed his admiration for how seamlessly Henry has adapted to the Ravens’ offense, which wasn’t always a given. “I just didn’t think it was going to work out like this,” Brandt admitted. “It’s been so good and so badass. He’s coasting in the open field, going through for touchdowns untouched.”
With Derrick Henry on pace for another spectacular season, the conversation surrounding his potential MVP candidacy is heating up. As the Ravens look to continue their impressive campaign, all eyes will be on Henry to see if he can maintain his incredible momentum and secure the coveted MVP title.
