Comedian Nikki Glaser found a creative way to channel her disappointment after Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated Eras Tour concerts in Vienna were unexpectedly canceled. Alongside her sister, Lauren Glaser, the pair remixed Swift’s hit song “Cruel Summer” to reflect their chaotic journey to the Austrian capital.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, August 7, Nikki, 40, shared a video of the duo singing their revised lyrics, which humorously captured the series of unfortunate events they encountered. “We’re stuck at an airport gate / On our way to Vienna on a flight that was late,” they began, setting the tone for a travel saga that would end in disappointment.
The Glaser sisters had planned to attend one of Swift’s three sold-out concerts at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, scheduled for August 8, 9, and 10. However, the shows were abruptly canceled after Austrian authorities arrested two men allegedly plotting a terror attack at the venue. The shocking news led the siblings to vent their frustration in song, with lines like, “Then we get a text from our mom, saying that the shows have been canceled / because [of] a threat from a bomb / And we screamed in a Hudson News, ‘What the hell do I do with these goddamn sparkly shoes?’”
Despite the cancellation, Nikki and Lauren continued their journey to Vienna, albeit with a 32-hour layover in Washington, D.C. “Unintended 32-hour layover in DC before we finally head to Vienna for no reason,” Nikki wrote in an Instagram Story, injecting some humor into the situation. “JK, I know Vienna has other things to offer besides Taylor Swift but name even one!!!”
Upon arrival in Vienna on Thursday, the Glaser sisters shared Austrian news coverage of the arrests, showing they were still determined to make the best of their trip. Nikki, a self-proclaimed “Swiftie,” has been a devoted follower of Swift’s Eras Tour, attending multiple shows across Europe, including stops in Dublin and Amsterdam.
Nikki’s admiration for Swift runs deep, as evidenced by her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month, where she revealed she had attended five concerts in just 10 days. “I was on break from tour and I was seeing Taylor Swift. That’s what I do with my free time,” Nikki shared, adding that her European travels were primarily motivated by Swift’s tour schedule.
Nikki’s dedication to the Eras Tour doesn’t come cheap. During an October 2023 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, she confessed to spending over $25,000 on tickets for nine different concerts. “I kind of did the math and I’m like, ‘If I had kids I’d be paying for, like, dance camp and swim lessons,’” she joked. “I should just use all this money. And I was going to freeze my eggs in January and that’s, like, about how much it costs. And then I just decided not to freeze them, I decided to burn them.”
Though Nikki and Lauren missed out on seeing Swift in Vienna, their spontaneous remix of “Cruel Summer” turned a disappointing situation into a memorable and entertaining moment for their followers.
