In a recent disclosure, it has been revealed that Donald Trump, the prospective Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, may contemplate pulling the United States out of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) if his stated conditions are not fulfilled.

ADVERTISTMENT

**What Happened:**
According to a Rolling Stone report released on Sunday, Trump, who had earlier expressed intentions of withdrawing the US from NATO during his first term, is now considering how this could be achieved if he wins a second term. Trump is reportedly considering reducing the US role in NATO to a “standby” position.

According to insiders, Trump has shown an aversion to having his potential new administration dominated by “NATO lovers”. He has entertained the option of a complete U.S. withdrawal from NATO but believes this could be avoided if NATO accedes to his demands, which include significant increases in defense spending by non-US members and a reevaluation of the principle of collective defense.

ADVERTISTMENT

The ex-president has also shown interest in a proposal called “NATO on standby,” which, according to a source close to Trump, could severely weaken the organization.

Trump’s plans heavily depend on his victory in the 2024 presidential election. However, any attempts by Trump to alter the US role in NATO would likely face strong opposition, with critics arguing that such a move could compromise US national security.

**Why It Matters:**
As per a Benzinga report from August, former National Security Advisor John Bolton had criticized Trump’s foreign policy, suggesting it was “erratic” and self-serving.

“He doesn’t think in policy directions when he makes decisions, certainly in the national security space. It’s all connected with how things benefit Donald Trump,” said Bolton at the time. He had warned that a second Trump term would likely result in the U.S. withdrawing from the security alliance.

Later, in October 2023, a Democratic Congressman, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill), labeled Trump as a “walking national security risk,” following his controversial remarks about Israel at a campaign rally, as reported by Benzinga.
