An 11-month-old boy from Indiana lost his life with traces of multiple drugs, including fentanyl, in his system. As a result, the parents are now facing serious charges from local authorities.
Local police issued warrants for both parents on October 6, related to the tragic incident that occurred last month. Kaytlen Sha Dossett, 27 years old from Evansville, Indiana, was arrested on Monday, facing multiple charges of neglect, including neglect leading to the baby’s death. Her husband, 30-year-old Taylor Mitchell Fischer, also faces neglect and drug charges but is currently on the run, according to the Evansville Police Department (EPD).
The arrest warrants were filed shortly after the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office received the results of the baby’s postmortem blood test, which indicated the presence of several drugs. The substances included fentanyl, a potent sedative called xylazine, often mixed with fentanyl, and “4-ANPP,” a precursor to fentanyl. Additionally, the infant exhibited a presumptive positive for Naloxone, a drug administered to individuals who overdose on opioids.
The EPD officers received a call around 11 p.m. on September 11, responding to a medical emergency involving the baby at a residence on North Spring Street in Evansville. The 11-month-old, identified as Carsen Taylor Fischer in an obituary, was found unresponsive.
Dossett dialed 911 that night, reporting that her baby was not breathing, and his lips had turned blue.
Upon arrival, the police discovered the unresponsive baby in Dossett’s arms, and Fischer was also present. Paramedics made every effort to revive the child, but he was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
During the initial inspection of the house, officers detected the odor of marijuana and noticed drug paraphernalia in plain sight. A search warrant for the residence led to the discovery of paraphernalia and narcotics, including psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, and a substance resembling methamphetamine.
Fischer displayed signs of impairment at the scene, and subsequent testing confirmed the presence of multiple drugs in his system, including fentanyl and methamphetamine. Dossett tested positive for marijuana.
Two other children were found unharmed in the house and were placed under the care of the Department of Children’s Services. Dossett and Fischer were brought in for questioning at the EPD Headquarters.
Dossett reported that she had put her son to sleep on the couch around 8:00 p.m. after briefly leaving him in Fischer’s care while she made a quick trip to Target. She claimed to have been in the same room as the baby for most of his nap and found him unresponsive when she decided it was time for bed.
During the interview with the EPD, Dossett mentioned the possibility that the child might have come into contact with something on the floor but denied it being hers.
Dossett is currently detained in the Vanderburgh County jail with a $250,000 cash bond.
The EPD is urging anyone with information about Fischer or his whereabouts to call 911.
