Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently concluded their visit to Nigeria, where they were warmly welcomed and showered with gifts, including exquisite artwork and traditional attire. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on the tour to support the Invictus Games and engage in charitable endeavors, following an invitation from Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria.
During their stay, the royal couple participated in fundraising events and delivered impactful speeches, showcasing their commitment to philanthropy and global advocacy. However, it was their acceptance of the gifts from locals that caught attention, as it diverged from the strict protocol governing the acceptance of gifts by members of the Royal Family.
Traditionally, working royals are prohibited from accepting gifts that might place them under any obligation to the donor. However, since stepping down as senior royals in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no longer bound by these regulations. This departure from protocol allowed them to graciously receive a variety of presents, ranging from artwork and clothing to jewelry and books on Nigerian heritage.

Among the notable gifts were two paintings presented to Prince Harry by the governor of Kaduna state, Senator Uba Sani. One painting depicted a touching moment between Harry and his late mother, Princess Diana, while the other portrayed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex together. Additionally, Meghan was delighted to receive a piece of art from a young girl during a charity polo match, showcasing roses, sunshine, and animals.
The couple also embraced Nigerian culture by donning traditional attire, with Harry receiving a traditional Nigerian outfit during a reception at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters in Abuja. Meghan adorned a stunning Aso-Oke outfit on the final day of the trip, further showcasing their appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria.
As their visit to Nigeria comes to an end, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to return to the United States, with a brief stopover in London. While they will not be meeting with members of the Royal Family during their time in the UK, their tour has served as a testament to their ongoing commitment to charitable endeavors and cultural exchange on the global stage.
