Chilling tragedy unfolded early Friday morning in River Ridge, Louisiana, leaving a mother, her 2-year-old child, and their father dead while two daughters, aged 9 and 13, remain hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The harrowing incident, described by Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto as one of unimaginable loss, began with a brave 911 call from a young child inside the home.
At approximately 4:00 a.m., Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) deputies responded to the 10000 block of Stephen Drive after receiving the distress call. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered the lifeless bodies of a 40-year-old mother and her toddler, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Two other children, ages 9 and 13, were found injured but alive. The 9-year-old underwent emergency surgery and remains in critical condition, while the 13-year-old, who sustained a gunshot wound to her ankle, is recovering.
In a tense standoff, deputies confronted the armed father of the victims in a back bedroom. According to reports, the man brandished a firearm, prompting deputies to open fire. He was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary evidence suggests that the father was responsible for the shootings before deputies arrived.
A Child’s Bravery Amidst the Chaos
Sheriff Lopinto commended the courageous 911 call from one of the surviving children, calling her a “brave little girl” whose quick thinking enabled a swift response. “Her actions may very well have saved lives,” he remarked during a press briefing.
Investigative Efforts Underway
The JPSO is conducting a dual investigation into the tragic double homicide and the subsequent deputy-involved shooting. Authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the incident through witness interviews, security footage, and forensic analysis. An internal review of the deputies’ actions during the confrontation is also in progress to ensure transparency.
Sheriff Lopinto emphasized the gravity of the situation, assuring the community of a thorough investigation while acknowledging the immense grief and trauma surrounding the case.
