The Republican National Committee (RNC) has come under scrutiny for its lavish spending of $250,000 on limousines within the past year, a stark contrast to its reported financial challenges. This revelation, exposed by a Newsweek report on Friday, December 22, 2023, sheds light on the RNC’s spending practices during a period when the committee reported its lowest bank balance since 2016.

As of the end of November, the RNC’s spending funds stood at a meager $9.96 million, less than half the $21.35 million reported in 2016 following Donald Trump’s presidential victory. This financial strain is emphasized by Federal Election Commission (FEC) disclosures, revealing that the committee disbursed a considerable $256,635 on limousine travel expenses since October 21, 2022.

The RNC’s choice of extravagant transportation wasn’t confined to limousines; the committee also engaged in 56 Uber cab journeys from January to November 2023, with a substantial payment of $31,296.55 made on January 10 of the same year.

However, transportation expenses are just the tip of the iceberg. The RNC’s spending spree extended to numerous hotel bills, with transactions totaling $622,204.93 at various branches of the Four Seasons Hotel for travel expenses, venue hire, catering, fundraiser supplies, and parking. Additional expenses were incurred at Marriott Hotels and Hilton Hotels, including a noteworthy transaction of $659,848.52 at a Marriott Hotel.

Moreover, the RNC allocated $75,000 for renting the Ritz Carlton in Dallas, Texas, in October, including catering costs. Fast-food charges also made a significant dent in the committee’s budget, with $4,655.55 spent, including 67 purchases at Starbucks, 13 from Shake Shack, 23 from McDonald’s, and 17 from Chipotle between January and November 2023.

Unveiling more surprising expenditures, data reveals that the RNC disbursed about $9,000 for dry cleaning and over $70,000 for flower arrangements since October 2022, all while grappling with general budgetary concerns.

The financial narrative of the RNC has witnessed a downturn under Joe Biden’s administration, with reported funds dropping from $65.47 million in 2021 to $9.12 million in October 2023—the lowest since 2015. Sources familiar with the GOP’s financial situation informed the Washington Post in November that the party’s donations have experienced a recent decline.

In stark contrast, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) reported last week that it holds over $20 million in cash on hand, nearly double the RNC’s disclosed amount. These revelations prompt questions about the RNC’s financial management and priorities.

While the RNC is within its rights to allocate funds, the optics of such extravagant spending during a financial crunch raise concerns about the committee’s reputation and credibility. As of now, the RNC has not commented on these revelations, but it is evident that their financial decisions will face scrutiny in the days to come.
