Roy Keane has openly expressed regret over his harsh criticism of Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire. The former Manchester United captain, known for his blunt commentary, acknowledges that his remarks on Sky Sports went too far.
Keane has frequently scrutinized Maguire’s performances at Old Trafford. However, he now concedes that his approach was excessive, especially considering Maguire’s recent omission from England’s Euro 2024 squad due to injury.
In a candid discussion on the “Stick to Football” show, presented by Sky Bet, Keane reflected on his behavior. “I was harsh on Harry Maguire,” Keane admitted. “You hope to keep it to footballing reasons, and obviously, we cover a lot of Manchester United matches, and he was struggling at the time. But you also think about the mental health of players, and I definitely crossed the line with Maguire.”

Keane specifically recalled a moment when he mocked Maguire, acknowledging it was inappropriate. “I remember one time I kind of mocked him a little bit, and that is definitely out of order. I crossed the line, and listen, I played the game, I know it’s not easy. But I’m also big enough to apologize to him. Sometimes we pundits get it wrong too.”
Maguire’s absence from Gareth Southgate’s final England squad for the Euros due to a calf injury has been a significant blow. His replacement, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, has performed admirably in Germany, though England’s overall form has been inconsistent.
The Three Lions managed to secure a spot in the quarter-finals after a mixed group stage, facing Slovakia next. Maguire expressed his disappointment, saying, “I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer. Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted. For me, representing England is the highest honor.”
Maguire plans to return to Manchester United’s medical team to prepare for the upcoming season, demonstrating his commitment to both club and country.
