In a disturbing new development, Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz has become the victim of a Kremlin-backed disinformation campaign involving AI-generated deepfake videos. According to a report by WIRED, these false videos are spreading damaging and fabricated rumors, falsely accusing Walz of sexually assaulting former students.
This campaign, allegedly orchestrated by a network known as Storm-1516, is believed to be backed by Russia. Experts tracking these efforts claim that the same network has been linked to various false claims, including a previous accusation against Vice President Kamala Harris involving a fabricated hit-and-run incident from 2011.
Misinformation Spreads Ahead of 2024 Election
The deepfake videos targeting Walz have gained traction online, particularly within far-right circles. The false narrative was primarily pushed by QAnon-related accounts and shared widely by notable conservative figures, including Trump campaigner Jack Posobiec and activist Candace Owens. The videos claim that Walz, a former football coach, engaged in inappropriate behavior with one of his students, despite these claims being entirely fabricated.
One particular deepfake video, which used information from a former student to create a false narrative, was quickly identified as fraudulent by users on X (formerly Twitter). The man depicted in the video also came forward to confirm that the allegations were completely false, further discrediting the claims.
Russian Disinformation Tactics at Play
Darren Linvill, co-director of Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, stated that the tactics used in the attack on Walz are consistent with previous Russian disinformation campaigns. “There is little doubt this is Storm-1516,” said Linvill. The group is known for creating fake social media accounts to infiltrate far-right networks, where they spread misleading information under the guise of whistleblowers or citizen journalists.
Much of this disinformation can be traced back to John Dougan, a former police officer from Florida now working with the Kremlin. Dougan played a central role in spreading the initial false claims about Walz, even appearing alongside an anonymous individual claiming to be a former student. Dougan runs multiple fake news sites that are frequently used by the Storm-1516 network.
Coordinated Efforts to Undermine Tim Walz
Alex Liberty, a researcher tracking Russian disinformation efforts, noted that the campaign against Walz appears to be part of a larger coordinated effort. “We believe that it might be a coordinated campaign to bring numerous false accusations of the same nature against Tim Walz through different channels and formats to create a sense of legitimacy,” said Liberty.
Despite the widespread dissemination of these videos, none of the claims against Walz have any credible evidence. Fact-checking organizations like NewsGuard have debunked these false accusations, often by analyzing the videos themselves or directly contacting the individuals involved. McKenzie Sadeghi, an editor at NewsGuard, pointed out that the deepfake video is part of a broader campaign aimed at damaging Walz’s reputation ahead of the upcoming election.
With the U.S. elections approaching on November 5, 2024, this disinformation campaign serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by deepfakes and foreign interference in democratic processes. Tim Walz, whose appeal stems from his background as a schoolteacher and coach, has faced a concerted effort to portray him falsely, with the aim of undermining his political candidacy.
As voters prepare to head to the polls, it’s crucial to remain vigilant against disinformation and seek out credible sources of information to ensure that democracy is not undermined by falsehoods.
