Move to bolster Ukraine’s defense against ongoing Russian aggression, U.S. President Joe Biden has signed into law a $61 billion aid package. The aid, part of a broader foreign assistance bill, aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses amidst escalating tensions in the region.
The significant aid package has drawn a sharp response from Russia’s top diplomat in the United States, Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov. Antonov warned that the aid signifies a dangerous escalation towards an all-out conflict, accusing the U.S. of choosing the path of war.
In a statement to Newsweek, Antonov cautioned, “America has chosen the path of war and agonizing delays of the inevitable collapse of the Zelensky regime.” He accused the U.S. of escalating tensions by encouraging attacks on Russian territory and lamented the breakdown of bilateral strategic dialogue.
The aid package, which includes a range of weaponry from air defense missiles to armored vehicles, is viewed as vital support for President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government. It comes at a critical time, with Ukraine facing relentless attacks on its cities and recent territorial gains by Russian forces.
While the U.S. sees its support for Ukraine as necessary in the face of Russian aggression, Moscow perceives the conflict differently. Antonov reiterated Russia’s stance, alleging that the ongoing confrontation is a result of NATO expansionism along Russia’s borders.
Despite growing political infighting in Washington over foreign aid commitments, the aid package has garnered bipartisan support. President Zelensky welcomed the assistance, emphasizing its importance in resisting Russian aggression and safeguarding Ukraine’s freedom and sovereignty.
However, Russian accusations of U.S. militarization and aggression have cast a shadow over the aid package. Antonov condemned U.S. satisfaction with the influx of orders into the military-industrial complex, alleging that U.S.-provided systems have been used by Ukrainian forces against civilians.
The aid bill’s broader implications extend beyond military assistance, with provisions allowing for the transfer of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s economy. Antonov decried this as part of the same hostile strategy against Moscow, warning of the breakdown of the international financial system.
