Sabrina Carpenter recently shared a personal story behind her iconic curtain bangs, a look that has become part of her signature style. The 25-year-old singer and actress opened up in a new interview with Vanity Fair, revealing that she first cut her bangs after experiencing her “first real heartbreak.”

“I literally cut my bangs ’cause someone broke my heart and I was just like, ‘I have to do something,'” Carpenter explained in a video released on June 20. “I’m not usually one of those people that has to make rash decisions when their feelings are hurt, but that was my first real heartbreak and so I guess it just sparked that initial like, ‘I have to do something different.'”

During the interview, while painting a self-portrait, the “Espresso” singer discussed her post-breakup beauty transformation. Carpenter noted that she never considered altering her natural hair color because she felt comfortable as a blonde. “I never wanted to dye my hair because I always felt comfortable as, you know, blonde, the way I was born,” she said.

Although Carpenter did not name the person responsible for her heartbreak, fans speculated it might be her former High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett. The pair sparked dating rumors in the summer of 2020, but never confirmed a relationship. In early 2021, their fellow castmate Olivia Rodrigo released the hit single “Driver’s License,” which many believed was about Bassett.

Both Carpenter and Bassett confirmed they were single by late 2021, around the time Carpenter debuted her new bangs. Despite the speculation, Carpenter focused on her own journey and self-expression.

Carpenter also shared insights into her fluctuating self-confidence. “I really think that the beauty of being this age is some days you can feel truly borderline so conceited and obnoxiously confident,” she said. “And then all it takes is someone saying one thing that just strikes a chord in you to be like, ‘I’m actually the ugliest person to ever exist.’ And then it kind of is a big flip-flop.”

Despite the ups and downs, Carpenter emphasized that she has “better things to worry about than the way that I look.” Her fans, however, continue to admire her glamorous beauty looks. In her recent music video for “Please Please Please,” which features her boyfriend Barry Keoghan, Carpenter wore Prada’s Moisturizing Lip Balm in the shade Astral Pink, which adapts to the pH of an individual’s lips to create a rosy pink hue.
