Dominic Calvert-Lewin is keen to break Everton’s Premier League scoring record, but the striker faces challenges in finding his form and securing a new contract. Manager Sean Dyche acknowledges that more is needed from Calvert-Lewin while expressing confidence that the forward can regain his scoring touch.
Calvert-Lewin’s Aspirations
The 27-year-old Calvert-Lewin recently shared his ambition to become the Toffees’ all-time leading scorer in the Premier League. Currently, Romelu Lukaku holds the record with 68 goals, while Calvert-Lewin is 12 goals behind and just four shy of Duncan Ferguson, who is in second place.
Despite his aspirations, Calvert-Lewin has struggled to find the back of the net consistently. He last scored more than 10 league goals in a season during the 2020-21 campaign, when he netted 16 times. Injuries have hindered his performance, but he returned to full fitness during the latter part of last season.
Recent Performance and Manager’s Support
October proved challenging for Calvert-Lewin, as he failed to score throughout the month after netting two goals in September. Dyche has continued to support him, particularly given the struggles of other strikers like Beto, who recently scored a late equalizer against Fulham, and Armando Broja, who is currently injured.
Dyche emphasized the importance of hard work and maintaining standards, stating, “He’s working hard at his game and finding that streak which brought him goals previously. Goals will come if you keep making sure you’re playing well and running hard.” He believes that if Calvert-Lewin can position himself effectively and keep up his efforts, the goals will eventually come.
The Impact of Playing Style
Critics have pointed out that Everton’s playing style may not suit Calvert-Lewin’s strengths, which has contributed to his struggles in finding form. Since Everton sold Lukaku to Manchester United for £75 million in 2017, Calvert-Lewin’s market value has significantly declined due to his injury history.
Contract Uncertainty
Calvert-Lewin’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and there has been limited interest from other Premier League clubs despite previous speculation. The uncertainty surrounding his future is compounded by Everton’s ongoing situation regarding a potential takeover by the Friedkin Group, which has left the club in limbo regarding new contract negotiations.
“All contract talks are the same as exactly they were,” Dyche explained. “We try to stay open with all these players. He’s a valuable player to us, and we still think there’s more to come from him.” He further mentioned that both parties are eager to find the right moment for a contract resolution.
