Sean Penn has never been one to bite his tongue—but his latest comments have lit up social media with backlash. The two-time Oscar winner made headlines after comparing former President Donald Trump to a dangerous, vengeful killer during a recent appearance on The Jim Acosta Show podcast.
In a conversation with CNN host Jim Acosta and Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, the 64-year-old actor said Trump reminds him of a spouse-murderer obsessed with chaos. “If he can’t have her, nobody can,” Penn said, suggesting Trump could take a similar attitude toward the world if denied power again.
The explosive remark came as Swalwell criticized El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele for aligning too closely with Trump. Swalwell warned Bukele’s legacy might suffer in the long run—especially after Bukele offered to expand the country’s mega-prison, CECOT, to take in migrants deported by the U.S. under a Trump administration.
“We’re willing to take in only convicted criminals, including U.S. citizens,” Bukele recently announced, proposing a deal to help America “outsource” part of its prison system.
Penn, clearly disturbed by the growing global embrace of Trumpism, warned of even darker possibilities. He suggested Trump’s worldview is driven by narcissism and a lust for power so extreme, he could potentially “try to destroy the world” as a final act of dominance.
“I think Donald Trump and his solipsism may have that relationship with the world,” Penn said. “This destruction is in part a power play. I think he might try to destroy the world before he ages out of life.”
The reaction online was swift and brutal. Critics tore into the actor, branding him out-of-touch, delusional, and hypocritical. “Penn has absolutely lost his mind. Shut up and act you buffoon,” one commenter raged on X. Others dismissed him as an “elitist,” a “Communist sympathizer,” or simply “clueless.”
The controversy also reignited scrutiny of Penn’s own past. During his marriage to Madonna in the 1980s, he was dogged by tabloid rumors of domestic abuse—allegations both he and Madonna have denied. In fact, she later defended him in court during a defamation case, insisting he was never physically violent toward her, despite one argument reportedly escalating so badly that a SWAT team responded.
Still, the internet hasn’t forgotten. Many questioned whether Penn is the right person to make such extreme analogies, especially given his history and his relationship with much younger women, like his former girlfriend, actress Valeria Nicov, who is three decades younger than him.
Long known for his outspoken political views, Penn previously called Trump “an enemy of mankind” in a 2018 Time op-ed. Now, with this latest incendiary comparison, he’s once again making headlines—and enemies—across the political spectrum.
