Former U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a bold step in supporting media requests for live television coverage of his upcoming federal trial, where he faces charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

In a legal motion filed late Friday, Trump contended that prosecutors were seeking to keep the trial “in darkness,” alleging a politically motivated agenda by President Joe Biden’s administration to undermine his potential re-election bid next year.

Trump, currently leading the field of Republican candidates for the 2024 presidential nomination, claims the trial is part of a broader effort to tarnish his reputation. Meanwhile, Biden is anticipated to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for a second term.

The federal court trial, scheduled for March, encompasses charges of attempting to defraud the federal government and obstructing Congress by knowingly spreading false claims of election fraud. Trump’s baseless allegations of a rigged 2020 vote had incited thousands of his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in a failed attempt to block the congressional certification of his defeat by Biden.

In a filing by his legal team, comprised of John Lauro and Todd Blanche, Trump voiced support for media organizations seeking live television coverage of the proceedings. The filing stated, “Every person in America, and beyond, should have the opportunity to study this case firsthand and watch as, if there is a trial, President Trump exonerates himself of these baseless and politically motivated charges.”

The document accused Special Prosecutor Jack Smith’s team of violating Trump’s constitutional rights and criticized U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan for allowing what it called “attacks” on Trump’s rights, accusing her of prioritizing “the interests of his political opposition” over legal protections.

“Proceedings should be fully televised so that the American public can see firsthand that this case…is nothing more than a dreamt-up constitutional charade,” the filing asserted.

Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, in a Nov. 3 filing, opposed the media requests, citing a decades-old federal court rule prohibiting broadcasts of criminal proceedings. Smith argued that television coverage could potentially intimidate witnesses and jurors.
