Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, found himself in the hot seat during an interview with CNN’s State of the Union host Dana Bash on Sunday morning. The discussion revolved around the testimony of former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker in former President Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial.
Bash wasted no time in pressing Graham about his concerns regarding the “catch and kill” arrangement between Pecker and Trump, aimed at suppressing negative stories about the former president before the 2016 presidential election.
Graham downplayed the significance of the arrangement, citing other public figures who have been involved in similar situations. “You know, apparently a lot of people do this. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tiger Woods, I think the whole thing is a crock,” Graham asserted. “The statute of limitations has long shut out the misdemeanor cases.”
Graham went on to accuse Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of resurrecting old misdemeanors as a “political hit job” on former President Donald Trump, just six months before the 2024 election.
However, Bash pushed back, emphasizing that the allegations pertain to campaign-related issues, unlike the examples Graham provided. “Obviously, Tiger Woods is not running for president and the allegation is about campaigns,” Bash pointed out.
In response, Graham chuckled and doubled down on his stance, dismissing the entire situation as “political B.S.”
Newsweek reached out to Graham’s office for additional comment on Sunday morning, but no response was provided at the time of reporting.
The exchange between Graham and Bash highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial and the efforts of prosecutors to hold him accountable for potential campaign finance violations.
As the trial unfolds, key figures like Pecker continue to provide crucial testimony, shedding light on the inner workings of former President Donald Trump’s circle and raising questions about accountability and justice in the political arena.
