Serbian Football Association (FSS) is demanding severe punishments for Albanian and Croatian fans, threatening to withdraw from Euro 2024 if action is not taken. This follows accusations that Croatia supporters sang anti-Serbian songs during a match against Albania.
Accusations of Offensive Chanting
During the 2-2 draw between Croatia and Albania in Hamburg, Croatian fans were accused of chanting offensive songs targeting Serbia. The FSS condemned these actions and also criticized an Albanian journalist’s behavior at the stadium. The FSS has officially written to UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis, urging for strict repercussions.
Statement from the Serbian FA
The Serbian FA released a statement denouncing the chanting as “shameful.” FSS General Secretary Jovan Surbatovic emphasized that Serbian supporters have behaved respectfully, despite UEFA investigating separate allegations of racial abuse by Serbian fans during a match against England in Gelsenkirchen.
Previous Incidents and Punishments
UEFA has already fined the Serbian FA £12,200 for the lighting of fireworks and displaying a provocative banner during their match against England. Despite these penalties, Surbatovic insists Serbian fans have generally conducted themselves well and demands similar accountability from Croatian and Albanian fans.

Potential Consequences for Euro 2024
Surbatovic has warned that Serbia may withdraw from the tournament if UEFA fails to act against the alleged misconduct. He highlighted that Serbia expects fair treatment and accountability for all teams involved in the competition. Surbatovic stated, “What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even at the cost of not continuing the competition.”
Calls for Sanctions
The FSS is not only seeking punishment for the Croatian and Albanian fans but also lauds UEFA’s decision to remove the Albanian journalist from the championship. The Serbian FA stresses the need for equal treatment and justice, reflecting their broader appeal for sportsmanship and integrity in the tournament.
Broader Context
In a separate incident, Albania was fined £31,500 by UEFA for fan-related offenses during their opening game against Italy. These charges included the lighting of fireworks and displaying another provocative message, adding to the tense atmosphere surrounding fan behavior at Euro 2024.
Upcoming Matches
Serbia is set to face Slovenia on Thursday, while England will compete against Denmark. The outcome of UEFA’s response to the FSS’s demands could significantly impact the dynamics of the tournament.
