Developing scandal shaking the Metropolitan Police, at least seven officers are now under investigation for allegedly placing bets on the timing of the General Election. The probe, led by the Gambling Commission, has revealed significant concerns about the misuse of confidential information to gain unfair advantages in betting activities.
Initially focusing on Metropolitan Police officers, the investigation has expanded to include a member of Rishi Sunak’s close protection team. This individual was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, marking a widening of the scope of the inquiry by Scotland Yard.
Andrew Rhodes, Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are focused on an investigation into confidential information being used to gain an unfair advantage when betting on the date of the General Election.” He further assured ongoing collaboration with the Metropolitan Police to ensure a just resolution to the case.
Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin, leading the Met’s investigation, underscored the coordinated effort with the Gambling Commission. “There will be a small number of cases where a broader criminal investigation by the police is required,” she stated, highlighting the complexity of the unfolding probe.
Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, details remain limited to safeguard its integrity and ensure fairness. “To protect the integrity of the investigation and to ensure a fair and just outcome, we are unable to comment further at this time,” said Rhodes regarding specifics of the ongoing inquiry.
The Metropolitan Police and the Gambling Commission have pledged to provide updates on significant developments as the investigation progresses.
