Tim Alexander, renowned drummer of the alt-metal band Primus, recently made headlines with his unexpected departure from the group. The announcement came on October 29, catching fans and bandmates off guard. Alexander explained his decision, stating, “My heart just wasn’t in it.”
In an email sent to his bandmates on October 17, Alexander shared his struggles, revealing that his passion for music had dwindled. The remaining members of Primus expressed their surprise at the news, acknowledging that Alexander’s choice was disappointing but respected.
In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Alexander elaborated on his feelings. “A lot of times, you do something you love for a long time, and sometimes the passion turns into a job,” he remarked. Over the years, he noticed how his dedication to drumming began to impact his physical health, mental well-being, and family life. “I had to sit and think about exactly what am I doing,” he admitted.
Despite the challenges he faced, Alexander emphasized a positive outlook. He stated, “I’m feeling really good… I feel strong, but I’ve had to make these changes to get to this point.” Though he expressed discomfort with his aches and pains, he highlighted that he was the happiest he had ever been.
Following the public announcement of his departure, Alexander expressed surprise that only parts of his heartfelt letter to the band were shared with the public. He conveyed admiration for his bandmates and shared the personal nature of his message.
In light of Alexander’s departure, the remaining members, Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde, indicated they would have to make “tough decisions” regarding upcoming performances. They contemplated canceling their annual New Year’s show but ultimately decided to move forward with a special performance featuring members of Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade.
Additionally, for their upcoming festival date with Tool in the Dominican Republic, they announced that Danny Carey, their former touring drummer, would fill in for Alexander. The festival, dubbed “Tool In The Sand,” is set for March 7-9, 2025, and will feature a lineup that includes prominent bands like Mastodon, Coheed And Cambria, and Eagles Of Death Metal.
Tickets for this all-inclusive experience are now available on the Tool In The Sand website, offering fans an exciting opportunity to see Primus and other bands perform in a stunning setting.
