In a fiery dispute that unfolded in Kissimmee, Florida, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene accused “Communist Democrats” of suppressing free speech as she faced the cancellation of her book signing event, originally slated to be held at Westgate Resorts and organized by the Republican Party of Osceola County.
Greene, a vocal critic of what she labels “cancel culture communists,” asserted her victory in relocating the event to Orlando, boldly declaring her commitment to free speech in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“I wanted to come on and declare victory over the cancel culture communists,” she declared, emphasizing her determination to exercise her right to free speech.
Despite attempts by Newsweek to solicit a response from Representative Greene’s Washington D.C. office, there was no reply to inquiries regarding the contentious book signing event.
The controversy unfolded when NBC News highlighted an event invitation linking the occasion to the third anniversary of the Capitol Hill riot, prompting Westgate Resorts to promptly cancel the booking, citing a lack of awareness regarding the event’s purpose.
Responding to the cancellation, Greene took to social media, condemning those she held responsible in a video posted on X.
“The Communist Democrats tried to shut down my book signing. They lost!” she asserted, urging her supporters to attend the relocated event in Orlando. Greene accused her political opponents of distorting the truth and perpetuating lies about the situation.
In a passionate video statement, she declared, “This has been absolutely outrageous; the Democrats want to do anything to cancel everything I say, cancel the words you speak because they hate free speech.”
Furthermore, Greene criticized Democrats, alleging that they were undermining U.S. democracy by attacking the First Amendment. “They claim they’re defending democracy, but you and I both know they’re not defending democracy; they’re destroying democracy,” she added.
The political tension between the Democratic and Republican parties has intensified, with President Joe Biden seizing the opportunity to label Donald Trump, the current Republican presidential frontrunner, as a danger to democracy during a speech in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Biden pointed to Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the November 2020 election and the Capitol Hill riot by his supporters on January 6, 2021. In response, Trump, during a campaign rally in Iowa, dismissed the president’s comments as “pathetic fearmongering” and accused him of “abusing George Washington’s legacy.”
