Nearly half of the more than 92,000 transgender and nonbinary individuals surveyed by the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) have considered moving to another state due to legislative threats to their access to gender-affirming healthcare, public facilities, and participation in school sports, according to a report by The Hill on Tuesday, February 7, 2024.

This survey highlights the significant influence of state-level policies on transgender individuals, with concerns spanning from healthcare accessibility to educational opportunities.

As legislative landscapes continue to evolve, many in the transgender community are faced with the challenging decision of whether to relocate in search of increased acceptance and protection of their rights.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the year 2024 has seen a surge in anti-LGBTQ bills, with nearly 400 introduced or carried over from the previous year. These bills not only jeopardize LGBTQ rights but also contribute to an atmosphere of hostility, fostering an unsafe environment for LGBTQ individuals.

Research conducted by The Trevor Project indicates that one-third of LGBTQ youth aged 13 to 24 have experienced a decline in mental health due to legislation targeting their sexual orientation or gender identity.

This concerning trend is prompting LGBTQ individuals across the nation to weigh the options of moving and seeking refuge in more LGBTQ-friendly environments, particularly following the enactment of controversial laws such as Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which has led over half of LGBTQ parents to contemplate relocation.

Legislation that prohibits gender-affirming healthcare for transgender minors further limits options for families of transgender youth, particularly in states predominantly led by the GOP. These families are confronted with the difficult choice of either remaining in their current residences or providing their children with essential healthcare endorsed by major medical organizations.

With twenty-three states and counting implementing bans on such healthcare for transgender minors, these restrictions sometimes extend to adults as well.

According to a survey released by the NCTE on Wednesday, the majority of respondents who considered relocating due to anti-LGBTQ laws hailed from Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

However, the report, listed in alphabetical order, does not specify the exact number of transgender individuals relocating from each state nor does it identify the most popular relocation destinations.

Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, NCTE’s executive director, underscored the widespread impact of discrimination originating from state legislatures and governments, stating, “It’s really striking that this is spread around the country in response to this, essentially, discrimination out of the state Legislature and the government.”
