December 29, 2023, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has found herself amidst a storm of controversy after her decision to exclude former President Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot.
Bellows defended her move on MSNBC and CNN, triggering a vehement response from online conservative commentators. On X (formerly Twitter), a prominent account accused Bellows of displaying excitement and joy in removing the former president from the 2024 Maine ballot.
The decision, announced on Thursday, was based on Bellows’ argument that Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election constituted an “insurrection,” rendering him ineligible under the 14th Amendment. This amendment prohibits individuals engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” from holding certain offices, although its interpretation remains disputed.
In an interview on MSNBC, Bellows detailed the decision, stating, “Under Maine law, the secretary of state has the authority, indeed the obligation—I’m duty-bound to make this determination.”
She asserted that Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021, amounted to an insurrection as per the 14th Amendment, leading to his disqualification from future presidential service.
Conservatives on X expressed outrage, accusing Bellows of partisan bias. Videos of her interviews circulated, with one caption claiming Bellows couldn’t contain her excitement about removing Trump from the ballot.
Critics questioned Bellows’ motives, with some suggesting she was part of a larger plot. Podcast host Joey Mannarino labeled her decision as “treasonous.”
Democratic Representative Ted Lieu, among others, supported Bellows’ decision, emphasizing her adherence to the Constitution.
In response, Trump’s campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, condemned Bellows’ actions, accusing her of election interference and voter disenfranchisement. Bellows, a former ACLU attorney, served in the Maine Senate before becoming secretary of state in 2021.
The controversy surrounding this decision underscores the deep political divisions in American politics, with conservatives expressing concern over the potential impact on the 2024 presidential race. As the nation watches, the debate intensifies, leaving the outcome uncertain.
