Simon Cowell recently opened up about the profound impact his 10-year-old son Eric has had on his life, especially during a period of intense grief following the loss of his parents. A Downward Spiral
During the podcast, Cowell reflected on a particularly dark time after the death of his mother, Julie. He described himself as “desperately unhappy” and admitted to being a “ridiculous workaholic.” His relentless work schedule was a way to fill the void left by his parents’ passing. Cowell’s father, Eric, whom his son is named after, died in 1999, and his mother passed away 16 years later.

“I think particularly when I lost my mum, I was on a downward spiral at that point,” Cowell said. “I lost everyone, you know, I’ve lost my parents. It’s finality now. What I said about the material things I’ve got, everything just meant nothing at that point.”

The Turning Point
The turning point came when Cowell’s fiancée, Lauren Silverman, informed him that she was pregnant. This news came at a time when he had almost given up on finding joy in life. “When I got the call from Lauren, it changed everything in my life. It made me happy again,” Cowell shared.

Eric’s birth marked the beginning of a new chapter. Cowell recalled moments of pure joy, like watching The Jungle Book with his son and seeing the happiness on his face. These experiences reminded him of his own childhood and rekindled his zest for life.

A Lifesaver
Cowell credits Eric with saving him during his darkest times. He acknowledged that without his son, he might not have found his way out of the emotional turmoil. “Without question, without question. I really, really had reached the point where nothing mattered,” he admitted.

The TV personality also spoke about the difficulty of maintaining a public persona while dealing with private grief. “It hit me so hard, the hardest thing also was being on television as well … I felt like a clown here because I’m dying inside,” he explained.

Finding New Joy
Now, Cowell finds immense joy in seeing his son enjoy life, particularly during live tapings of America’s Got Talent. “He’s a great barometer,” Cowell said of Eric. “I look over to see if he’s having a good time, and when he’s up on his seat, excited, it’s the best thing.”

Simon Cowell’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of love and family. His son Eric not only brought him happiness but also gave him a renewed sense of purpose and joy in life.
