Realm of high-profile friendships and collaborations, few have captivated the public quite like Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Known for their roles as co-owners of Wrexham A.F.C. and their close-knit partnership, the dynamic duo recently faced a hiccup that tested their bromance.
Recently, McElhenney made waves by expressing his frustration over his cameo being cut from the highly anticipated film Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor and creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia had traveled to London specifically for his appearance in the record-breaking R-rated action-comedy, only to find himself on the cutting room floor.
In response to McElhenney’s public disappointment, Reynolds took to Instagram to clarify the situation. He quoted the oft-repeated adage in filmmaking, “Sometimes you have to kill your darlings,” to explain the tough decision. “A word on my ‘darling’ friend, @robmcelhenney,” Reynolds wrote. “Rob very kindly did a cameo in #DeadpoolAndWolverine which will hopefully live on in the digital extras. With a heavy heart (and through great outside intervention) I had to kill a darling with this cameo…”
Reynolds elaborated on why McElhenney’s cameo was cut, stating, “The sequence wasn’t working the way we’d originally constructed it. Rob was the only reason it stayed in the cut for as long as it did, because even under a TVA mask and helmet, you can feel him smoldering with a raw and almost infinite reservoir of talent, writerly wit, and ‘I create hit TV shows’ swagger.”
The Instagram post was a heartfelt tribute to their partnership. Reynolds acknowledged that McElhenney’s presence, even off-screen, had a calming effect on him during the stressful production process. “When I see Rob, my heart-rate slows and my nervous system stops yelling at me. He shows up for people. And he showed up for me,” Reynolds shared.
Despite the lack of a direct apology, Reynolds’ post served as a public gesture to smooth things over with McElhenney. The Always Sunny creator responded in good humor, commenting under Reynolds’ post, “How am I supposed to go back to writing dick jokes today?”
The incident has only added another layer to the already rich tapestry of their public and private friendship, proving that even the most solid relationships are not immune to the trials of the entertainment industry. Fans can look forward to McElhenney’s cameo potentially making it into the film’s digital extras, keeping the bromance alive in some form.
