The Three Lions are set to participate in their second consecutive European Championship final this Sunday, facing Luis De La Fuente’s Spain. England’s journey to the final was marked by a dramatic last-minute victory, with Ollie Watkins securing a 2-1 win against the Netherlands in the semi-final.

Spain, on the other hand, has maintained an impeccable record throughout the tournament, defeating top teams like Croatia, Italy, Germany, and France.

The Incident that Ignited the Rivalry
The animosity traces back to the Under-21 European Championship final in 2023. Cole Palmer scored England’s opening goal with a deflected free-kick and celebrated provocatively in front of the Spanish bench, inciting a heated confrontation between the two teams. Villarreal’s Alex Baena, now part of the senior squad, was particularly enraged by Palmer’s actions. Baena, supported by the entire Spanish bench, including goalkeeping coach Miguel Angel Espana, confronted Palmer on the pitch.

Spain Seeking Revenge
According to Spanish publication AS, the Spanish players are eager for retribution due to Palmer’s perceived arrogance during the Under-21 final. This incident has reportedly fueled their motivation to win the upcoming final.

England’s Confidence
Despite the tension, Cole Palmer remains confident. Speaking to the England YouTube channel, Palmer expressed the team’s excitement and determination. “Everyone’s buzzing,” he said. “Last night on the bus, tunes were on, [in the] changing room, everyone was just enjoying it. But obviously, it’s a short turnaround and it’s a massive, massive game to change our lives, our family’s lives, and to make everyone proud. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Palmer emphasized the importance of finishing the job: “I think if you’ve got to this final, then you have to hopefully finish the job. It’s all good getting to the final, and you’ve got to enjoy it because you don’t get many moments to enjoy. But, no, everyone just wants to win so bad.”

A Clash to Remember
As both teams gear up for what promises to be an intense final, the memories of past conflicts add an extra layer of drama to the showdown. Fans around the world are eagerly anticipating whether Spain will get their revenge or if England will secure back-to-back European Championship titles.
