Harrowing early-morning altercation near the NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station, a suspect was fatally shot, and three police officers sustained injuries in a Northeast Washington, D.C. shooting. The incident unfolded around 4:38 a.m. on Monday when officers responded to reports of an armed man in the lobby of an apartment building on Florida Avenue NE, according to D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith.
The suspect initially fled into an elevator upon encountering the officers, prompting a building-wide search involving additional personnel. Moments later, the man re-emerged from the elevator, where a confrontation quickly escalated. As officers attempted to detain him, the suspect brandished a firearm and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
Despite officers’ attempts to provide emergency medical care, the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The individual’s identity has yet to be disclosed.
Three officers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and were immediately transported to local hospitals. Chief Smith confirmed in a press briefing that all three are in stable condition, offering a grim reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement daily.
The D.C. Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division and the Criminal Investigations Division have launched an inquiry into the events, with oversight from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Meanwhile, the involved officers have been placed on routine administrative leave, adhering to departmental policy.
Road closures remain in effect around Florida Avenue NE, between 2nd and 4th Streets NE, and along 3rd Street NE from Florida Avenue to M Street NE, as investigations continue.
“This incident highlights the risks our officers confront every day in service to our city,” Chief Smith emphasized. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
