Symone Sanders Townsend, the host of MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” has recently taken to social media to accuse Fox News of bias in its coverage of Vice President Kamala Harris. Sanders Townsend, who previously served as a spokesperson for Harris, claims that the network’s reporting reflects both racial and gender biases.

In her social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Sanders Townsend voiced her frustration with Fox News, asserting that their coverage of Harris was both exhausting and problematic. The controversy was ignited by a Fox News article titled “Ex-Kamala Harris Spox Hints at Bad Experience Working with VP.” The article referenced a comment Sanders Townsend made about potentially not working for another woman in the future, which was interpreted as a reflection of her experience with Harris.

Sanders Townsend clarified in her response that her remark was a reaction to perceived gender bias in media coverage, not a personal comment about working with women. “Yes because folks like y’all made my job harder than usual,” she wrote. “The misogyny. The racism…the not covering what she said or did.”

The former spokesperson accused Fox News of perpetuating stereotypes and failing to cover Harris’s achievements and statements accurately. She emphasized that her frustration was rooted in the systemic biases faced by women, particularly women of color, in high-profile positions.

The Fox News article that triggered the debate was published last month but gained renewed attention after Sanders Townsend’s remarks. The piece highlighted her experiences and frustrations while working for Harris, emphasizing the unique challenges associated with being the first female Vice President of color.

In response to Sanders Townsend’s criticism, a Fox News insider suggested that she should focus on improving the ratings of her MSNBC show rather than targeting Fox News. “Maybe Symone should worry less about Fox News and more about her lousy ratings,” the insider commented.

Sanders Townsend, who also worked on Senator Bernie Sanders’s 2016 campaign, has previously discussed the challenges of working for high-profile female politicians. She has pointed out that such roles often come with heightened scrutiny and discriminatory attitudes.

On MSNBC, Sanders Townsend has reflected on her experiences, noting that the role of being the “first” in any significant position often leads to increased scrutiny and the reinforcement of negative stereotypes. “The thing about being the first is because you’re the first—whether you’re the first woman, first person of color, so on and so forth—folks just sometimes don’t know how to deal with you,” she said.

This ongoing debate underscores the broader issues of media representation and the specific challenges faced by women of color in politics. Both Fox News and Sanders Townsend remain central to the conversation about media bias and its effects on public perceptions of political figures.
