Tori Spelling has shared her heartfelt reflections on her final conversation with Shannen Doherty, revealing her deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect before Doherty’s passing. In a recent episode of the “90210MG” podcast, co-hosted by Spelling and Jennie Garth, Spelling opened up about her emotional experience.
During the July 22 episode, Spelling, 51, recounted how she had endured numerous losses in her life and had come to terms with her regrets. However, she expressed a poignant sense of peace regarding her last exchange with Doherty, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer.
“I’ve had a lot of death in my life, and I don’t believe in regrets,” Spelling shared. “But I have a lot of regrets that I didn’t have that time to have a second chance to get past stuff from the past and look at all the good things and really talk it out and have that last conversation [with others].” Thankfully, she felt differently about her time with Doherty. “I feel like she and I had that [conversation], and I’m super grateful for that.”
Jennie Garth, 52, who also worked with Doherty on the iconic TV show Beverly Hills, 90210, reflected on the importance of Spelling’s final moments with Doherty. “I was thinking definitely of you, Tor, and how happy you must have been to have that time with her,” Garth noted. “And to … sort of just [have a] reconnection on a deeper level as both of you, you know, matured and [grew] and learned so much.”
Garth expressed her own feelings of regret for not having a recent, heartfelt conversation with Doherty. “I wished that I had had that opportunity,” she admitted. “But I was very glad that you did.”
The connection between Spelling, Garth, and Doherty extends back to their time on Beverly Hills, 90210, which aired from 1990 to 2000. Spelling and Garth portrayed Donna Martin and Kelly Taylor, respectively, while Doherty played Brenda Walsh. The show also featured Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green, and the late Luke Perry.
In 2019, the cast reunited for the short-lived spinoff BH90210, a tribute to their late co-star Luke Perry, who had died earlier that year. Doherty, who left the original series in 1994, returned for the reboot to honor Perry.
Reflecting on their early days together, Spelling recalled a memorable scene from their first filming experience. “I can see right now the very first scene Jen and Shannen and I had together at Marian Moore’s party,” she said. “It was a night scene. That’s the one that sticks out to me. Maybe it wasn’t our first scene, but it was the first time I remember the three of us really bonding and me thinking like, ‘We’re all gonna be friends. This is more than just being on camera.’”
Spelling, whose father Aaron Spelling created the series, expressed her hope that she would fit in with Doherty and Garth, who were older than her. “You both were so accepting of me,” she reflected. “I remember that night [as us] just laughing. I mean, we filmed all night till the sun came up, which was a lot for teenagers.”
Garth echoed these sentiments, describing the experience as “exciting” and likening it to “a party,” with Spelling adding, “Yeah, minus the alcohol.”
In closing, Spelling honored Doherty’s legacy, calling her “a real trailblazer” and expressing how profoundly she valued her time with the 90210 cast. “I couldn’t imagine this lifetime not getting to know them all,” she said.
