Devastating turn of events that has left the Nashville community in shock, 26-year-old Austin Turner passed away on Thursday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after spending nearly three weeks in a coma. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded following an alleged assault by a security guard during a bar altercation at Tin Roof.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s report reveals that the altercation occurred in the early morning hours of February 18 between Turner and 36-year-old licensed security guard Richard Cornelius. Security footage obtained by WSMV allegedly captures Cornelius delivering multiple swings, culminating in a fatal blow that left Turner unconscious.
The aftermath of the altercation saw Turner suffering severe brain injuries, including a skull fracture, subdural hematoma, and massive strokes. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, which included a craniotomy, Turner remained in a coma until his tragic demise.
Cornelius, charged with aggravated assault, was released on a $25,000 bond. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is in discussions with the District Attorney’s Office regarding potential further charges.
In an emotional interview with WSMV, Meagan Turner, Austin’s stepmother, vehemently denied any provocation on Austin’s part. “I know in my heart of hearts that my son was not doing anything that provoked this kind of attack,” she stated, reflecting the family’s disbelief and grief.
Brandi Maynard, Austin’s mother, conveyed her grief in a statement to The Tennessean, condemning the actions of the security guard that led to her son’s untimely death. “No mother ever expects to outlive and bury her children,” Maynard expressed, highlighting the profound impact of the loss on her and her family.
CEO of Tin Roof, Bob Franklin, confirmed Cornelius’s dismissal from the establishment, stating, “Aligning with the investigation, he is no longer with our team.” However, Franklin did not provide further details on the incident or Cornelius’s employment status.
As Austin Turner’s family grapples with the overwhelming grief and a sense of injustice, they have set up a GoFundMe page to cover medical expenses and funeral costs. The community is urged to come together to support the family in their quest for justice and to honor the memory of a young life tragically cut short.
