PEORIA, ARIZONA: In a heartbreaking turn of events, Benji Gregory, best known for his role as Brian Tanner in the beloved sitcom ‘ALF,’ was found dead in his car alongside his service dog, Hans. The discovery occurred in a Chase Bank parking lot in Peoria, Arizona, on June 13, 2024. Gregory was just 46 years old.
Vehicular Heatstroke Suspected
According to reports from TMZ, Gregory’s sister Rebecca Hertzberg-Pfaffinger revealed that he struggled with bipolar disorder, depression, and a severe sleep ailment. On the day of his passing, temperatures in Arizona soared to 109 degrees. It is believed Gregory succumbed to vehicular heatstroke while preparing to deposit checks at the bank. His dog, Hans, also tragically passed away in the sweltering heat.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office is currently investigating the exact cause of death.

A Beloved Child Star
Benji Gregory rose to fame in the 1980s, portraying the endearing character Brian Tanner on ‘ALF.’ The show, which aired from 1986 to 1990, centered around an alien named Gordon Shumway—nicknamed ALF, for Alien Life Form—who crash-landed into the Tanner family’s garage. Gregory starred in 101 episodes, capturing the hearts of audiences nationwide.
Beyond ‘ALF,’ Gregory appeared as a guest star on popular shows like ‘The A-Team’ and ‘The Twilight Zone.’ He also featured in TV pilots such as ‘Fenster Hall,’ ‘Mr. Boogedy,’ and ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash.’

After stepping away from the limelight, Gregory enlisted in the US Navy in 2003. He trained as an aerographer’s mate, focusing on oceanography and meteorology. His service was cut short in 2005 due to a medical discharge. Following his military career, Gregory married Sarah Gregory in 2006.
In a 2000 interview with People, Gregory reflected on his acting career, expressing relief that ‘ALF’ was canceled, signaling his departure from acting. He maintained no regrets about his time on the show, despite the challenges of working under hot studio lights.
