Former President Donald Trump has leveled accusations against the judge presiding over the upcoming “hush-money” trial just a day before its commencement in New York. Trump claims that Judge Juan Merchan allowed insufficient time for his legal team to review extensive documentation pertinent to the case.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump asserted that Judge Merchan’s actions reflect a bias in the case. Trump alleges that his legal team was given only a brief period to scrutinize “hundreds of thousands” of documents that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg purportedly concealed unlawfully.
Trump emphasized the timing of the trial, insinuating political motives behind its scheduling amidst his presidential campaign. He criticized the proceedings as an attack on his political opposition, referring to President Joe Biden.
Prosecutors, according to court filings, disclosed providing over 10 million pages of documents to Trump’s lawyers between May and July of the previous year. Despite Trump’s legal team’s request for additional time to review the materials, Judge Merchan denied the extension and set the trial’s jury selection for April 15.
Trump’s attorneys had previously accused the district attorney’s office of obstructing their access to evidence from the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney. However, Judge Merchan dismissed multiple attempts to postpone the trial, citing insufficient grounds, including claims of prejudicial media coverage influencing potential jurors.
The defense argued that extensive media coverage unfairly portrayed Trump as guilty, potentially tainting the jury pool. Trump’s legal representative, Todd Blanche, highlighted widespread negative publicity involving former lawyer Michael Cohen and adult performer Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels.
The New York trial marks the first of four criminal indictments against Trump and represents the first criminal trial of a former president in U.S. history. The charges allege Trump manipulated company records to conceal payments to Cohen during his 2016 campaign, including hush money paid to Clifford.
Trump’s legal team has called for Judge Merchan’s recusal, citing alleged bias and conflicts of interest related to his daughter’s professional associations. Despite facing an arduous trial lasting approximately eight weeks, Trump has hinted at participating in campaign-related activities and even testifying during the proceedings.
As the trial commences, Trump continues to decry what he perceives as a politically motivated “show trial” aimed at impeding his campaign efforts. Despite the legal challenges ahead, Trump remains resolute in his defense against the accusations levied against him.
