Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that a ceasefire deal had been reached between Israel and Hamas, signaling a major step towards ending hostilities in Gaza. The agreement, confirmed by Israeli officials, also includes the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas since the October 7 attacks.
“We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly. Thank you!” Trump declared on Truth Social, emphasizing his administration’s influence on brokering the deal. In a follow-up statement, he credited his “Historic Victory in November” as the turning point that set the stage for the agreement.
Trump revealed that his Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, had been working alongside representatives from the outgoing Biden administration in Qatar to mediate between Israel and Hamas. Sources highlighted Trump’s role in breaking the deadlock that led to the “midnight breakthrough” over the weekend.
Israeli officials stated that Hamas dropped its demands concerning the Philadelphi Corridor, a critical area near the Egypt-Gaza border used for smuggling weapons. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had consistently insisted on retaining control of this territory to ensure long-term security.
While the ceasefire framework has yet to be finalized, Israeli security agencies have begun preparations for “Operation Sparrow’s Wings,” aimed at retrieving the hostages. Additionally, Egyptian state media reported plans to open the Rafah crossing to facilitate the entry of international aid into Gaza.
Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden also addressed the agreement, describing it as a humanitarian milestone. “This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much-needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families,” Biden stated, outlining a phased approach to implementing the agreement.
Hamas negotiators lauded the ceasefire as a victory, framing it as a testament to their “resistance.” The agreement is expected to begin with the release of hostages, particularly women, the elderly, and injured individuals, followed by the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The Israeli security cabinet is set to convene to approve the deal, which has garnered bipartisan support within Israel. Leaders such as opposition figure Yair Lapid expressed gratitude to Trump, Biden, Qatar, and Egypt for their roles in facilitating the agreement.
The ceasefire’s success hinges on detailed execution, with both sides navigating contentious issues, including prisoner exchanges and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
