The confrontation erupted when Trump directly addressed Mills, demanding to know if she would enforce the new federal mandate. Mills, a Democrat, refused to back down, asserting that she was following state and federal law. But Trump wasn’t having it.
Trump: “We Are the Federal Law”
The former president wasted no time making his position clear. “The NCAA has complied immediately, by the way, that’s good… Is Maine here? The governor of Maine? Are you not going to comply with it?” he asked, putting Mills on the spot.
Mills responded defiantly: “I’m complying with state and federal law.”
Trump fired back: “We are the federal law… You better do it because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t. And by the way, your population, even though it’s somewhat liberal—although I did very well there—your population doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports. So you better comply because otherwise you’re not getting any federal funding.”
Mills: “I’ll See You in Court”
Unfazed, Mills pushed back: “I’ll see you in court.”
Trump, never one to back down from a challenge, welcomed the fight: “Good. I’ll see you in court. I look forward to that. That should be a real easy one. Enjoy your life after governor because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”
Governor Mills Fires Back!
Following the dramatic exchange, Mills released a statement doubling down on her stance, vowing to fight back against what she calls federal overreach.
“If the President attempts to unilaterally deprive Maine school children of the benefit of federal funding, my Administration and the Attorney General will take all appropriate and necessary legal action to restore that funding and the academic opportunity it provides. The State of Maine will not be intimidated by the President’s threats.”
This battle is far from over, and it’s clear that the fight over women’s sports has reached a boiling point. Stay tuned for updates as this explosive story develops!
