Donald Trump sparked controversy during his recent visit to North Carolina, where he addressed the threats directed at FEMA workers amid the ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene. While surveying the damage, Trump defended the voices of those criticizing federal emergency responders, claiming that people have a right to express their frustrations.

“I think you have to let people know how they’re doing,” Trump stated, responding to questions about the threats FEMA employees have faced. “If they were doing a great job, I think we should say that too because I think they should be rewarded … If they’re doing a poor job, we’re supposed to not say it?”

His remarks come after FEMA halted its recovery operations in the region due to an alarming surge in threats against its workers. Reports indicated that a North Carolina man, armed with an assault rifle, was arrested on October 12 for allegedly threatening FEMA employees.

Trump characterized those criticizing FEMA as “honest people,” asserting that they are “entitled to say it.” This defense of public dissent adds a layer of complexity to the situation, as FEMA is currently navigating a challenging recovery effort amid external pressures.

The agency’s pause in operations followed misleading claims propagated by Trump and other Republicans about the federal response to Hurricane Helene. These claims included assertions that the government could manipulate weather patterns and accusations that FEMA was withholding aid to the local population while prioritizing assistance to illegal immigrants.

Despite the unfolding controversies, Trump continued to push back against the federal government’s actions, stating that resources were being allocated to “illegal migrants” rather than local recovery efforts. His statements reflect ongoing tensions surrounding federal disaster responses and the political narratives that often accompany them.
